What is the highest score that a candidate in UPSC mains has scored in the essay?

Could verbosity be a reason for this, along with empirical data?

If I tell you a candidate has scored as high as 170/250 in the essay and he/she didnot have an outstanding control over language, will you believe it ?
If I say a candidate scored as low as 20/250 but he was one of the most intelligent candidates I had, will you believe me ?
Neither does your vocabulory nor your out of the world-expert knowledge help you score high marks. What UPSC demands is a generalist approach to an issue asked.
Wondering what it means ?
Here is the mains pattern and the marks carried by the essay paper.
Time allotted - 3 hours
No of essays to be written - 2
Time per essay 1.5 hours
Time to think and structure each essay - Around 30min
This means there is enough time to write an essay and every student who is well prepared for general studies has enough content . Students who follow a good strategy score higher .
5 ESSENTIALS OF A GOOD ESSAY
1. Writing an essay in a proper format .To know more , check
2. An essay demands a generalist approach. Example - If an essay on Public Private Partnership is asked, if you write only about the various modes of sourcing projects and write PPP in detail , it might look like an “economic essay” . A generalist view will involve the social, economic, administrative and political aspect of http://PPP.
3. Do not make mistakes in writing who said and what(in a quote)Quote examples of issues from current affairs and famous SC and HC judgements.Do not name individual politicians-their achievments/scandals.
4. Do not criticise the government throughout the essay .Give a balanced answer . Anofficer’s trait is to remain ‘anonymous, faceless, and neutral’ ,meaning your essay should look like it has been written by a graduate without taking any lopsided view.
5. Discuss the issue from every perspective -social, economic, political, administrative, legal, cultural.
Hope this helps :)
